This release pairs a 1985 live performance by Sonny Rollins featuring both soundboard audio and pro-shot video. The audio is sourced from a radio broadcast of his Osaka concert during his tour of Japan, while the video captures a televised performance at a jazz festival in Bern, Switzerland, held a few months later. The Osaka show features a sextet with vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, whereas the Bern performance is a quintet that includes an electric guitar and features Mark Soskin—who also played in the Osaka lineup—on electric piano; this allows listeners to enjoy performances by different ensembles from the same era. Although the Osaka recording is a soundboard source that has undergone remastering, some noise—likely originating from the original broadcast—remains in certain sections. For the Bern performance, the video quality has been enhanced and the audio remastered using specialized software; segments unrelated to the concert itself, such as the TV announcer's commentary and the program's opening sequence, have been edited out. While there is no menu screen, chapter markers have been set to correspond with the setlist.
