THE BEATLES / RUBBER SOUL : SESSIONS
MULTITRACK NEW REMIX ALBUM & THE STUDIO RECORDING SESSIONS
[3CD] BMI=BEAT MASTERS INTERNATIONAL BMI010SP(CD1/2/3)
【THE ALTERNATE ALBUM COLLECTION】
The "Alternate Album Collection" series is a new, overseas original compilation that thoroughly explores Beatles' original album-related audio sources based on the latest updates. It's a new reference collection carefully selected from a wide variety of interesting Beatles recordings, from newly discovered, never-before-seen tracks to original recordings. From the latest multi-track remixes to unreleased studio sessions and various versions, numerous unreleased and unearthed recordings that have been repeatedly updated are reconstructed after meticulous examination of their sound quality and editing. This is a noteworthy collector's edition series with the latest editing that thoroughly explores "alternative" recordings that cannot be heard through the limited publicly released recordings.
Released in the UK on December 3, 1965, this is the Beatles' sixth official original album. The double A-side single "We Can Work It Out / Day Tripper," not included on the album, was also released simultaneously and both reached number one on the UK charts. The album title is derived from the slang term "plastic soul," which implies that their music was not authentic compared to Black music. The North American version of "Rubber Soul," released by Capitol Records, features a unique track selection and editing, as with previous releases. The UK version adds "Dream Man" and "It's Only Love" from the album "Help!", and includes four tracks—"Drive My Car," "I'm Alone," "If I'm Going to Fall in Love," and "The Love That Disappeared"—onto the album "Yesterday and Today." The North American version is a "folk-rock album" with a different feel from the UK version. It also uses a different master than the UK version, resulting in the so-called "false start" at the beginning of "Where Are You Going?" and a different mix of "Words of Love." "Rubber Soul" is considered the band's first significant artistic achievement, greatly influencing the music scene at the time and pioneering the possibilities of pop music by broadening the range of lyrics and music. It is also highly regarded as the origin of later psychedelic and progressive rock, and marked a broad shift in direction from single-centric music to album production that consistently features high-quality songs. For the Beatles, this album marked a turning point, as they truly took the lead, making an artistic leap and evolving their recording techniques. The introduction of new instruments such as the sitar, harmonium, and fuzz bass enriched their expressiveness and arrangements, making it a crucial album that evolved from their early Merseybeat sound to that of albums like *Revolver* and *Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band*.
As part of the "Alternate Album Collection" series, *Rubber Soul* is released in two editions: *Rubber Soul: Sessions* and *Rubber Soul: Versions*, both as 3-CD sets. *Rubber Soul: Sessions* is a 3-CD set containing 30 tracks from the "Multitrack New Remix Album" and 60 tracks from "The Studio Recording Sessions."
DISC1 : MULTITRACK NEW REMIX ALBUM + SINGLES + INSTRUMENTALS
This release features all 14 tracks from the original album, newly edited multi-track versions, two unreleased singles, and instrumental versions of all album tracks. The first 14 tracks feature new stereo remixes that utilize AI technology to separate vocals and choruses, and reconstruct the multi-tracks of each instrument. These new mixes differ from previous official stereo mixes and remastered versions, notably clearly separating the lead vocals and chorus, and providing a clearer sound image for each instrument. The placement of guitars and drums is also different, making the sonic differences clearly discernible. In addition to the original 1960s stereo, this release includes new remixes by George Martin appearing on CD for the first time, as well as numerous other remasters and remixes, including brand new, updated stereo remixes that are making their debut. The instrumental section in the second half focuses on the Beatles' performance itself on this album. It's not simply the original with the vocals removed; the balance of each instrument and the stereo separation have been newly edited from the multi-track source, resulting in a complete instrumental album.
DISC2 : THE STUDIO RECORDING SESSIONS 1
DISC3 : THE STUDIO RECORDING SESSIONS 2
This release features studio session recordings from October 12th to November 1965, tracing the album's production process in roughly chronological order. It includes previously unreleased session recordings and other existing recordings that have not been included in official releases. In addition to the familiar previously released and official recordings, the latest updated editing has improved the sound quality, and many tracks that were previously only available in mono are now presented here in stereo for the first time. The tracks included here are demixes that continue to evolve with the latest updates, not just separating vocals and instruments, but also featuring multi-track stereo remixes where the vocals themselves have been individually extracted, and overdubbed choruses and instruments have also been individually separated. Iconic choral work on tracks like "Nowhere Man," "In My Life," "If I Fall in Love," "Words of Love," "Think for Yourself," "You Want to See Me," and "Wait" features John, Paul, and George's three-part harmonies separated individually, or mixes of John's vocals alone or Paul's vocals alone, resulting in unprecedented new sound sources. While such extracted tracks have often been mono in the past, this collection features original stereo remixes with different editing and mixing, which is noteworthy. Both in terms of the number of tracks and content, this is a best-of compilation of the latest updated recordings.
*This is part of the "Rubber Soul/Alternate Album Collection," an original compilation series from the overseas production team "BMI (Beat Masters Int.)" label. It's a limited edition, deluxe triple gatefold sleeve 3-CD set with original paper jacket design and original liner notes for the Japanese market (direct import original pressing).
